Re-Felt And Battening

Re-Felt And Battening

Even with small repair work we take all the care we would if it were a larger new roof. Most houses contain bitumen felt known to crumble away after a few years and is simply out dated. Our felt is breathable, Strong and waterproof. Our battens are treaded and our roofing work is quality.

What does re-felting and battening a roof involve?

Re-felting and battening involves removing the roof tiles, replacing the old roofing membrane (felt) and timber battens, then reinstalling or replacing the roof tiles. This improves weather protection and extends the life of the roof.

When does a roof need re-felting and battening?

This is usually recommended when the existing felt has deteriorated, the battens have rotted, or the roof is being re-roofed. Signs include leaks, sagging, damaged battens, or torn roofing felt.

Can I keep my existing roof tiles?

Yes. If the tiles are in good condition, they can often be carefully removed and reused after the new felt and battens have been installed.

What are roof battens?

Roof battens are treated timber strips fixed horizontally across the roof. They support the roof tiles and help create a secure roofing system.

What is roofing felt?

Modern roofing felt is usually a breathable membrane installed beneath the tiles. It provides an extra layer of protection against rain, wind, and condensation.

How long do roof battens last?

Pressure-treated roof battens can last for many decades when installed correctly and kept dry beneath a sound roof covering.

Do all roof battens need replacing?

Not always. If the battens are still strong, straight, and free from rot, they may be suitable for reuse. A roofing inspection will determine their condition.

Can damaged felt cause roof leaks?

Yes. Torn or deteriorated felt allows wind-driven rain and moisture to enter the roof space, which can lead to damp and water damage.

How long does re-felting and battening take?

Most residential projects take between two and five days, depending on the size of the roof, weather conditions, and whether new tiles are also being installed.

Is re-felting cheaper than replacing the whole roof?

If the roof tiles are still in good condition, re-felting and replacing battens while reusing the tiles can be a more cost-effective solution than a complete new roof.

Should breathable membrane be used instead of traditional felt?

Yes. Modern breathable membranes are widely used because they help reduce condensation while still protecting the roof from water ingress.

Can I re-felt one section of my roof?

Yes. Localised repairs are sometimes possible, although larger areas of deterioration may require the whole roof slope to be re-felt.

Does re-felting improve insulation?

While roofing felt itself provides little insulation, replacing damaged felt helps improve weather resistance and keeps insulation in the loft dry and effective.

How do I know if my battens have rotted?

Signs include loose tiles, sagging roof sections, leaks, and timber that feels soft or crumbles when inspected.
